It must have been great when we think how God judged it. 4 While it remained unsold, did it not … But that should not cover up the fact that this death is a picture of how God feels about it. Maybe because it was the first appearance of this sin in the church; maybe because it was to be a solemn warning to the church that God is not mocked and that He desires truth in the inner parts (Psalm 51:6); maybe it was done according to 1 Corinthians 3:16-17; 1 Corinthians 5:5; 1 Corinthians 11:28-32 –- what John called ““a sin that leads to death””. Sproul says, we forget that God’s patience is designed to lead us to repentance, not to become bolder in our sin. They opened the door to the Devil; it was premeditated, deliberate, intentional and planned; husband and wife were partners in deception. Ananias and Sapphira were impressed by this and quite genuinely wanted to play their part, so they decided to sell … Their punishment for this sin of deception and hypocrisy was instant death. That is why John Newton wrote, “Tis grace that taught my heart to fear.” As the fear of God increases, so does the sense of his love, because we understand more fully what we have been saved from. [7] After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. So why did Ananias and Sapphira? Not everyone who lies gets struck down immediately for their sin. Sin is a deadly serious matter to God. Repentance means, “the action of repenting; sincere regret or remorse.” You look at your actions and feel regret for what you did wrong. To the unbeliever it is the fear of God’’s judgment –- look up Hebrews 10:27 and 31. It is not surprising that after God’’s judgment fell on Ananias and Sapphira, “”great fear seized the whole church”” (verse 11). And yet despite being recipients of such great grace, they spurned it for the praise of men. Why did God’’s judgment fall like this? It is significant that when the sin of Ananias and Sapphira had been dealt with, and the offenders had been removed, God’s blessing came down –- just read Acts 5:11-14! There are no locked doors or hidden closets for the Holy Spirit. Ananias presented his donation to Peter. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has xSatan filled your heart to lie yto the Holy Spirit and zto keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? “Great fear seized the whole church” ( Acts 5:11 ). We see this most often through the healing miracles, but it is equally true of this judgment. A couple of reasons: First, their deaths—like much in Acts—serve as a sign.
